Being Mindful About Technology

While some teachers are quick to embrace technology in the classroom, others are more hesitant. On one hand, technology can allow for accessibility options, ready students for the digital world, and create learning opportunities not previously available. On the other hand, technology may disconnect students from the real world, be used by a teacher to placate children in lieu of real teaching, and encourage technological addiction.

The SAMR Model

To ensure the teachers are using technology in a way that enhances learning and doesn’t detract from the education experience, the SAMR model can be used. The SAMR model can help teachers to evaluate new technology by asking themselves:

  1. Substitution: Is this new technology the same as the analog experience delivered through technology?
  2. Augmentation: Does the new technology lead to some improvement in the learning experience?
  3. Modification: Does the technology allow for the task to be redesigned?
  4. Redefinition: Does the technology allow for a task to be completed in a way previously not possible?

If technology is simply a substitute for a hands-on experience, then teachers may want to think twice before using it. However, if technology allows for a task to be modified to make it more accessible for students or if it redefines the task and leads to something new then technology would be a great addition to the classroom.

Sketchnoting

Other than the SMAR model, one of the other main topics for this week’s EDCI 336 class was sketchnoting. Sketchnoting allows students to use a combination of words, pictures, and mind mapping to take notes in a creative way that is engaging and uses dual coding. I am planning on focusing on grades K-2 as a teacher and I think that sketchnoting will be really useful for students who have limited vocabulary and ability to write. By focusing on drawing and basic words they can record what they have learned or observed, without as much frustration from writing many words. It also teaches them to display their learning in multiple ways, helping to keep their brains flexible!

Infographics

Infographics are another great technology-based tool for teachers to utilize. Much like how sketchnotes deliver information both visually and with text, infographics create a holistic snapshot of a subject. Drag-and-drop builders like Canva can create an easier and more seamless experience for those that are new. See the infographic I made for my free inquiry below!
